jamesy from christchurch, New ZealandAbsolutely beautfiul photo Kylie I can't believe that he is happy to sit there and eat while you take his photo!!! Still a pest in NZ but very cute in Aussie 15 Sep 2008 6:06am dj.tigersprout from San Bruno, CA, United Statesso adorable! will he come and eat out of your hand? can you pet him? here they are considered quite dirty -- can't remember if that is the same in oz or not! great shot! 15 Sep 2008 7:00am @dj.tigersprout: Thanks DJ :o), yes he eats out of my hand, he waits for me each night to come out with his banana!!!!, I could almost pet him but I haven't wanted to scare him, I have only been feeing them really for a few months (my neighbour does also, they are very spoilt)... No I haven't got the idea here they are dirty or diseased, just painful when they live in your roof, but mine don't, they live up the big old trees that overhang my house, we (my cats, the possums and I) have a mutual understanding :o) Thanks for dropping by. I am heading home now, will visting your page soon! Linerberry from Sumner, Christchurch, New ZealandAmazing shot Kyles!!!! Awe, bless his little Possum socks:-))) Look at his little tongue tee hee! Those eyes....awe:-). I love him Kyles....you are so lucky:-) I did a bit of research and I thought these 2 sites were the best at giving the information on why the Possum in NZ is considered a pest and not in Australia. It also has a picture of a really 'not quite nice' possum from North America. Anyhoo, just if anyone is interested 15 Sep 2008 7:16am Linerberry from Sumner, Christchurch, New Zealand
15 Sep 2008 7:19am @Linerberry: ohhh deary me, you can buy possum garments!!!!! :o(, they look pretty much the same hey Liners, those north American ones don't look very friendly do they!! Don't think I would be feeding them my bananas... going to the next link, thanks for these, they are really cool! Linerberry from Sumner, Christchurch, New Zealandhttp://www.kcc.org.nz/pests/possum.asp Sorry Kyles...it won't let me post more than one link at a time!!! 15 Sep 2008 7:20am @Linerberry: Well there you go... unbelievable... I just looked up the Wikipedia and it tells me that the possies are protected in Australia and whilst somtimes a pain with their noisy hissing and garden pruning :o) they cannot be baited, but I don't think we get near as many here as you do, 20 in a yard and night? There would be nothing left!!!!!! Thanks so much for posting the info my friend, very fascinating indeed, although not sure about those possum furs you can wear LOL! Have an awesome evening! Maxine from Rangiora, New ZealandNeat image Kylie, you are wise to feed them, we had a family of wild opossums living near our farmhouse and they would pick up small pinecones and roll them down the roof and then slide claws out down the roof making a dreadful screeching sound!!! My husband at the time(not the one in the earlier photos) got so annoyed he grabbed the shot gun and let rip!! He forgot that the downpipe was where he had aimed and we had a sieve for a pipe for a few weeks until he fixed it. It was hilarious and the possums all survived!!!! 15 Sep 2008 7:38am @Maxine: OMG Max that is the funniest story, I am glad the possums survived, I bet your ex was even more annoyed at his hopeless aim and the damage he had to fix, too funny! Thanks for the laugh :o) Monique from Koh Samui, ThailandOh I envy you Kylie .. he's adorable! Never seen one before but he looks like a mixture of a kangaroo and a chinchilla! Good of you to spoil him and his friend, they are lovely and very funny I guess, after reading yesterday's post about the illegal visit to your kitchen :))) 15 Sep 2008 8:58am kylie from Shanghai, ChinaOh this makes me chuckle, I love Sam. He is so full of personality! 15 Sep 2008 9:11am Ron from Saint Louis, United StatesYours is a rather cute fellow, and he is posing quite nicely for your shot! Here, where I live in North America (an urban area), we mostly see them lying dead on the side of the road. I have a water garden in my backyard and so occasionally will have a possum or two wander in for water. I have to be cautious with my cat ... he's a rather territorial feline and prefers not to share his habitat with others. I'm not so sure how happy I'd be to find one having a snack on my kitchen table! 15 Sep 2008 10:56am @Ron: Hahha, thanks for your comments Ron, I have learned to put the fruit away in the cupboard so they haven't been in for a party for a while, I love them though and my cats find them fascinating, they just sit and look at them, I think the possums are in charge LOL, they are very cheeky but I find them quite lovable. The cat flap is actually a floorboard cut out in the kitchen, The timnber floor is very low to the ground, so they had worked out that if they come in under the house and up through the board they could get to the fruit, I had to train my cats to go in and out this way but the possums figured it out on their own :o). Thanks for stopping by, always lovely to read your comments! Rui from Leiria, PortugalHe's very cute! And has a very inquisitive face. Very nice shot Kylie 15 Sep 2008 11:30am papa bear from AustraliaGreat portrait Kylie 'tis amazing that he just lets you take a pix with a flash. They are pretty smart, he is repaying your hospitality by being model for you. 15 Sep 2008 11:38am @papa bear: Hahha, you are so funny Dad, I love this comment, you are right!!! He knows where the food is coming from, he's a smart boy the old Sam! Thanks for your comment :o), love ya to bits! bluechameleon from Vancouver, CanadaHow absolutely adorable! He's so tame...you've got a very cute friend there Kylie! 15 Sep 2008 12:47pm @bluechameleon: Thanks so much Bluechameleon, apprecite you stopping by and comment, it's always an honour! Mandy Provan from Johannesburg, South AfricaHey Kylie, Whata little cutie you have here!1 Great shot. 15 Sep 2008 2:15pm Steve Rice from Olympia, United StatesIf we had possums that cute, I'd feed them too. As I mentioned yesterday, we got the ugly branch of the evolutionary tree. Another great portrait of the cute guy. 15 Sep 2008 2:57pm Zygene from morlaix, FranceUne magnifique prise bien nette, vraiment de toute beauté. 15 Sep 2008 5:07pm Florence from Paris, FranceSo you wanted to know the trick about the Apocalypse Now movie poster ? 15 Sep 2008 6:55pm Marion from Nanaimo, BC, CanadaHe is so cute and obviously enjoying his nightly treat. 15 Sep 2008 7:31pm Charles from New York, United StatesNice shot. Great detail on the paws. Little fellow looks hungry. 15 Sep 2008 8:08pm Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomHe's enjoying the banana, maybe he thinks you've adopted him...? :) 15 Sep 2008 8:56pm Brian from Seattle, United StatesReally cute! Just like me, one banana each morning, very good stuff. 16 Sep 2008 3:46am @Brian: Hahha, he's cute like you or he has a banana like you Brian ? :o), thanks for stopping by, loved your comment! Rabbit from Richmond, United StatesYeah - I always thought it was funny that my Jasper *cute little thing - remember shes the sugar glider* I thought it was funny she was related to a Possum especially the ugly ones here - and yes most of the time they are pretty mean here. Yours looks cute as a button & now I can see how my sugar glider is related. They eat the same way... holding the fruit and then chewing. 17 Sep 2008 2:46am Elaine- from Vancouver, Canadawhat a cutie!! i love animals so much i forgot about your eggs and clicked on this guy's tiny icon lolol this is great 18 Sep 2008 7:26am Fliss from Melbourne Beach, United StatesI am with Elaine... I forgot about the eggs as soon as I saw this furry critter... we had one near my house and it was either bread/honey or apple... one time a baby had come onto our porch... we were patting him and feeding him... look back now it is a wonder he didn't take our hand off... the Possums here are vicious... here they are called Opossum and oh my... the teeth on them... 18 Sep 2008 11:44am Andrew Gould from Sydney, AustraliaYou and Sam have excelled yourselves in this second portrait, Kylie! He's posed well and you've caught him perfectly. 9 Oct 2008 12:50pm |
